• A very clear and innovative presentation of recent theories on language learning and teaching. Provides readers with ideas on how to integrate the teaching of critical thinking with reading and writing. Topics include sociocognitive and sociocultural theories, highlighting connections between research on metacognition and Vigotsky's theories. Particularly helpful is that each of the books 8 chapters does have a set of questions that enables the reader to think critically on the concepts and the issues covered.

• This book is very well written and is probably one of the clearest books I have read on the topic. It not only lays out theories in a way that is very accessible to the reader, it also provides concrete examples on how to apply such theories in language classrooms. One of my favorite parts of the book is the extensive review of previous theories and approaches in second language teaching in the recent years and Sagnier's description of how sociocognitive theory, along with sociocultural theories, ties in with all these approaches. I would highly recommend it to language teachers in general. The author surely knows how to balance theory and practicality and her book should appeal to a wide audience.
